What Effects Do Successful Executives Gain From Coaching?
One of the roles of executive coaches is to support the growth and development of executives to help them accomplish their goals. So what effects do executives gain from coaching?
Executives answered a survey regarding the effects they gained from executive coaching. Graph 1 shows a scatter plot of "goal accomplishment" (based on 1 item) vs. "effects gained from coaching" (based on average of 19 items).
Executives who have accomplished their goals showed that they also had certain effects gained from coaching, indicating the two have a strong correlation. So what specific effects did executives gain through coaching? Graph 2 shows the top 5 items where there were gaps in the effects gained from coaching between two groups. Group A were executives who had partly accomplished their goals while Group B were executives who accomplished their goals.
So if we look at Graph 2, 4 out of the 5 items (highlighted in blue) are items related to problem-solving. Through coaching, as the executives improved in their problem-solving skills, they were able to accomplish their goals.
Furthermore, we divided Group A into two groups. Group C were executives who gave a score of 4 in goal accomplishment, while Group D were executives who gave a score of 5 in goal accomplishment. Graph 3 shows the top 5 where there were gaps in the effects gained from coaching between two groups.
If we look at graph 3, 3 out of the 5 items (highlighted in orange) are related to relationship-building. Through coaching, as the executives improved in building relationship with others, they were able to accomplish their goals.
Our findings showed that executives experienced an improvement in their problem-solving skills and able to handle conflict through building good relationships with others, and we believe that these could be keys to an executive's success.
